EU battery recycled content: a two-stage staircase
Figures come straight from the legal text (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, Art. 8(2)/8(3)): phase 1 (2031) cobalt 16% / lead 85% / lithium 6% / nickel 6%; phase 2 (2036) cobalt 26% / lead 85% / lithium 12% / nickel 15%. Secondary sources often misstate these — the regulation is the reference.

Material recovery targets: two lines, 2027 and 2031
Figures come from the record titles: 90% for cobalt/copper/lead/nickel and 50% for lithium by end-2027; 95% and 80% by end-2031. Note 'recovery efficiency' (lead-acid 75%→80%, lithium 65%→70%) is a separate indicator and is not charted here.

Battery and recycling rules: the decisive dates
Twelve milestones across the EU and China — from the Batteries Regulation entering into force (2023) to recycled content phase 2 (2036). Conditional effective dates enter by their published date; the regulation is not second-guessed.

One supply chain, two regulatory paths: EU and China
The EU regulates the product (recycled content, passport, carbon footprint), China regulates the recycling system (traceability, scrapping, comprehensive utilisation). Both are real; they constrain different segments — which is why a number from one route does not substitute for the other.

Reuse this work

Text, figures and structured data on this page are free to reuse (including commercially), under two conditions:

  1. Attribution: credit "Source: Trustbase Lab" and keep a link to https://trustbaselab.com/en/energy/;
  2. Keep the identifiers: when citing a single fact, keep the record ID, as_of and confidence grade — they are the carriers of verifiability. Remove them and the citation loses its point.

Figures are generated at build time as inline SVG from our own data (data.json) — no external chart services, reproducible offline. Upstream third-party sources (UN Comtrade, EU official journals, ISO, WHO and others) remain the property of their respective rights holders; this page cites them factually and attributes them.
